ST. MARYS, GA
ONE OF THE OLDEST
CITIES IN THE COUNTRY
St. Marys, known as one of the oldest cities in Georgia as well as the country, was established in 1792 and incorporated in 1802.
A homestead with beautiful old oak trees.
St. Marys was also involved in the War of 1812. In 1815, the Battle of Fort Point Peter (Petre) occurred in St. Marys. The British captured the Fort and occupied it for a short time. The British burned the Fort everything included in it and then withdrew to Cumberland Island.

HISTORY IN
CUMBERLAND HARBOUR
This placard graces the entrance to our community.  It was erected by the Georgia Historical Society and the National Society of U.S. Daughters of 1812, State of Georgia.  This area was referred to as Point Peter Battery and the placard describes the events this area saw during the War of 1812.

A fort and barracks were occupied here, however, the post was abandoned after the U.S. acquired Florida in 1819.

OAK GROVE CEMETERY
Oak Grove is among the oldest public cemeteries in Georgia. It’s not well-known outside the area, nor does it often appear on lists of Georgia’s historic burial grounds, but it’s an anchor of the St. Marys historic district and is a great place to have a picnic or spend a leisurely hour or two. Just remember to bring insect repellent!
