| Last week we featured a medical issue and this week our well-being focuses on living in the midst of an abundance of wildlife. Nature in St. Marys can mean many things. It shows you can be as active or inactive as you wish and have many choices in how to live, play and relax! |
|
| Our Amenities Center features three pools, Har-tru tennis courts, pickle ball courts, fitness center, meeting room, restrooms, outdoor fireplace with seating area, playground, and an outdoor dining area with kitchen where monthly get-togethers (pre-COVID) are held. |
|
| We do have deer in our community. Although they are beautiful creatures, because of the abundance of wooded areas, it is very infrequent that we see any. They usually do not bother your flower beds or gardens which is a good thing! |
|
| Hummingbirds are a beautiful sight to see and they love a lot of flowering plants in the community; one of which is bottle brush. |
|
|
In a prior newsletter we had talked about a pair of eagles that had taken up residence at the top of a tall pine in Park Place. They had several eaglets last year and left the nest a few months ago.

|
| We have it on good authority that the eagles have returned and we are hoping for some more eaglets this coming year! |
|
| They are truly such majestic creatures with huge wing spans and such grace and beauty! Thank you Chip Barksdale, our resident amateur photographer, for these awesome eagle pictures! |

| Wood storks, ibis and a variety of hawks also grace our trees making Cumberland Harbour their home. |

| Cumberland Island, a short boat ride, ferry ride, kayak, or paddle board trip away, also abounds with wildlife. Here you can see what one of the majestic loggerhead sea turtles heading back into the ocean. |
|
| You can spot dolphins all over coastal Georgia. Also a sight that soothes the mind and the soul! |
|
| Whether it be the plethora of birds on the beach . . . |
|
| or roseate spoonbills on our lakes . . . ibis soaring over the marsh . . . |
|
| or visiting Cumberland Island and sharing the beach with these majestic creatures. Our area is a place of beauty and serenity that will refresh you every day! |

Hope for Right Whales
Fourteen calves might not sound like a lot but when it comes to North Atlantic right whales, it’s an encouraging number. The endangered whales (only about 400 are left in the world) winter and calve off the Georgia and Florida coasts. “January and February are the peak months for calving, so we are halfway through the season,” says Clay George, a wildlife biologist with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. “So far, these numbers are really heartening.” George and his team, divided between a boat and a spotter aircraft, spend most winter days on the water looking for new baby whales. Just the other day, they spotted a mother “cradling” her calf. “I wish everyone could see this,” he says. “We’d have a lot more stewards for rights whales.”
