In Orlando Magazine’s March 3, 2021 issue, Patricia Letakis, speaks of how “history and nature combine to make a visit to St. Marys and Cumberland Island a sweet Southern experience.”

St. Mary’s is described as the small-town America destination where every house has a front porch and a grandaddy oak in the yard; it’s  truly a hidden gem.  We tend to agree with Ms. Letakis’ description of our town!

She goes on to tell readers about the historic bed and breakfast, Spencer House Inn (circa 1872) run by proprietors Mary and Mike Neff who have been in business for the past 26 years hosting guests in their meticulous three-story home with a white picket fence and two story verandah.  Mary will even pack a box lunch for day trippers heading over to Cumberland Island.  Sitting on a rocking chair, visitors can see some of Osborne Street’s shops and the architecture of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Chapel built in the mid-1800’s.
Letakis also mentions Oak Grove Cemetery, where Revolutionary War soldiers are buried.  With its Resurrection angel statue guarding graves and oaks with flowing Spanish moss, the cemetery–with a little imagination–has an eerie feeling reminiscent of graveyard scenes from the film, “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. “

St. Marys is known as the gateway to Cumberland Island National Seashore.  The ferry which is located in downtown St. Marys is a offers a short ride over to an 18-mile-long barrier island accessible only by ferry or boat.  Once, there you may get lost in the “bewitching wilderness one of the country’s largest and most biologically diverse barrier islands.”  From maritime forests, whispering saltwater marshes, silky-fine sand dunes and majestic pastel-hued beaches.  One may find campers, bicyclists, local day-trippers in beach chairs soaking up sun and surf.  Even celebrities such as John F. Kennedy, Jr. and his bride Carolyn Bessette headed to Cumberland Island in 1996 to secretly exchange wedding vows in the tiny First African Church on the island.
Besides the few remaining buildings left on the island like the Greyfield Inn, run by descendants of the Carnegie family, and the Dungeness Ruins, Cumberland remains a pristine destination.  There’s no gift shop or restaurants on the Island and even campers must bring all their supplies and pack them out when they leave.

MORE HOME PLANS FROM SOUTHERN LIVING
This week we are featuring two additional home plans from Southern Living.  Both are under 2,000 sq. ft. and both are single story from architect John Tee from Atlanta.  Although garages are not shown here, all homes would be built with two car garages.
We like the floor plan on the St. George Cottage as the master suite is on the opposite side of the other two bedrooms and there is an oversized living room looking out onto a covered porch.

The Magnolia Cottage is another John Tee home plan with a somewhat similar floor plan with an oversized family room and each bedroom having its own bathroom.  It also has an optional second floor for additional bedrooms or flex space.
