THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD ON
CUMBERLAND ISLAND
Did you know Cumberland Island National Seashore is newly listed as a National Underground Railroad Network To Freedom site?

A little history: During the War of 1812, Dungeness was a working plantation that fell to the British just before the end of the war. Of the more than 1500 troops that marched ashore on Cumberland, many were African Americans that had joined the British in an effort to secure their freedom.

Hearing that the British had occupied it, dozens of African American men, women and children fled from northern Florida to  Cumberland Island. There, they boarded ships as refugees. Under cover of fog, many were able to escape to British colonies with their freedom.

SPEAKING OF CUMBERLAND ISLAND . . . .
“The essential job of being with horses is that it bring us in contact with the rare elements of grace, beauty, spirit and freedom.”  Sharon Ralls Lemon

Exterior of the Greyfield Inn; this is the only hotel on Cumberland Island and it is still run by descendants of the Carnegie family.

“To this day, the architectural elements of Greyfield have changed little from the way it looked at the turn of the last century.  From the interiors to the exterior, learn more about what it means to visit our grand and graceful mansion.”

CROSSING AN OCEAN TO

FIGHT VETERAN

PTSD AND SUICIDE

This group of four veterans has been traveling to different areas of the country and was recently at the St. Mary’s boat ramp displaying their high tech “row boat” and telling people about the 2021 Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge.
Each is a veteran from a different branch of the service but all have one thing in common:  they are the crew for this year’s Challenge and are raising awareness and donations to fight veteran PTSD and suicide.
Their journey will start in San Sebastian in La Gomera, Canary Islands and travel to Nelson’s Dockyard, English Harbour in Antigua.  This event in ocean rowing is more than 3,000 miles long.  We wish Team FOAR FROM HOME the best in their travels!
